After attended New York Medical College Dr. Heiden did his fellowship at Pacific Medical Center. He was an internist and emergency room doctor before "seeing the light", and becoming an Ophthalmologist. Dr. Heiden has worked in refugee disasters in Nepal, Tibet and Cambodia, where he documents health problems and has published a photography book on African famine. His wife Katherine Seligman is a journalist for the SF Chronicle, and they live in Haight-Ashbury with their children, Mathew and Halle.
